I GoT Beef

mcgani:

Okay, first of all, I haven’t been on Tumblr in so long I never even saw the ‘happy birthday’ messages I received (the freakin’ eleventh), so thank you all so much, sweet people!! ❤

Secondly, I just need to rant. I’m sure you know what I’m here to rant about, because of course I am, and I NEED TO, FOR GODS SAKES.

In too many words, here’s my beef with Ramsay’s death on Game of Thrones, and why I think it was, from nearly every angle, just a huge disgrace.

TW: Discussion/mention of rape, something I wish I didn’t have to warn about on anything ever related to Sansa in the first place, let alone so many things, but here we are

D&D: Littlefinger knows Sandor Clegane’s deepest, darkest, most personal secret, because he’s clever
Also D&D: Littlefinger apparently doesn’t know that the Bolton’s sigil and their betrayal of the Starks might mean they won’t treat Sansa well, because he’s an idiot

D&D: Sansa has to marry Ramsay to strengthen his claim in the North
Also D&D: Nobody gives a shit about Sansa or her claim and are already loyal to the Boltons anyway for helping them with the Ironborn, and also because they hate Robb

D&D: Makes Sansa marry Ramsay “for revenge”
Also D&D: Never actually mentions/seeks the original revenge she sought, but suffers unspeakable abuse in the process and gains a new motive for revenge, then still doesn’t get that revenge until thousands of people have died (including her brother) and her abuser has already been defeated, and all of it relied on the success of others rather than her own personal talents that she had several opportunities to showcase

No one is saying she should have kept him alive and been merciful. Most of everyone’s arguments are geared towards the fact that she CHOSE to kill him in an incredibly brutal way and reveled in said brutality. Look at her deadpanned expression and then that smile on her face after watching a man (even one as disgusting as Ramsay) be ripped apart by dogs. No matter how much she wanted it, she shouldn’t be numb to the violence and it’s not badass to be, even though the show runners think it is. They thought that moment was empowering and weren’t even thinking about exploring the fact that what she was doing was incredibly traumatizing and exactly the kind of “justice” Ramsay would deal out. What happens to the northern ways? Would that not have felt like a more powerful statement and a better parallel than this? My issue is that this is so far away from who Sansa’s character is and were supposed to feel good about this moment. D&D only know how to write one kind of woman and have one singular idea of female empowerment, which is violence. This was all just part of the rape revenge fantasy they had written and they called her steely walk away shot with the smile on her face after watching someone get eaten alive one of their favorite moments they’ve ever filmed on the show. Sansa’s forced upon storyline was never handled with care or consideration and this certainly wasn’t. They can’t fathom the thematic elements of the futility of war, revenge and violence that run throughout Martin’s novels.

It would have been a much more powerful moment if she was going to behead him herself and saying she has to do it because “The person who passes the sentence should swing the sword” and even showing it was hard for her but she did it because that is the Stark way.

But of course D&D doesn’t think Sansa is a “pure Stark” anymore so… not surprised she is more Bolton now, enjoying people being brutally murdered by dogs… and everyone cheering for it…

And having a public trial and execution would have been better for everyone else who suffered because of the Boltons, like the smallfolk and other Northern houses. It would have been justice and revenge…somehow I think some other people would have wanted to be present for that too. It would also have been a good opportunity to officially denounce the Bolton claim to Winterfell & the North, the marriage to Sansa, maybe even Ramsay’s legitmization.

Having Sansa swing the sword herself (or at least commanding Jon to do it) could have also been a way to show House Stark’s (or specifically, Sansa’s) strength – which is something she sorely needs, given the lack of support from Northern houses other than the Mormonts. And doing things publicly would have also shown her people that “the Starks are not like the Boltons; everyone – no matter how horrible they are and how much we personally hate them – is going to get a fair trial, even if it’s obvious that they’re going to be sentenced to death because their crimes are common knowledge by now”.

And I do understand Sansa feeling relieved because of Ramsay’s death, and I would never judge anyone for feeling gleeful in that kind of situation, but that’s just not Sansa. Book!Sansa does not feel gleeful and happy about people’s death, even if she had hoped they would die (like Joffrey) or if their death was good for her wellbeing. But of course, show!characters stopped having the personalities of their book counterparts a long time ago.
